Good Beer Guide Tick - #713
On reviewing the plans for 2022, I set a goal to complete the Worcestershire section of the Good Beer Guide before the 2023 edition is released.
The Huntsman is my last tick. Reach for the green stabilo highlighter!
Unexpected good weather leads to a decent walk across Kempsey Common. Super paths, views across the Malverns, ponies grazing. We disturb a man foraging for firewood on the roman road that runs alongside the M5. The motorway traffic disguises our approach and when I interrupt his poaching by saying "you're going to need a bigger wheel-barrow", he jumps out of his skin. "EFFING HELL, I NEARLY SH*T MYSELF" is roared at the top of his voice, showing how quickly society will break down when the chips are down. Once he had composed himself and couldn't have been more pleasant.

Onto the final tick.
The Huntsman is a freehouse, sitting in the middle of nowhere on the opposite side of the M5 to the main Kempsey village. The GBG details it as a 300 year old farmhouse. My walking book shows that it used to be named the Fox until the 1970s. There was a pet pig.

Inside, its as you'd expect. Low beamed ceiling, flag stone floors, nooks and crannies in a series of interconnecting rooms.

Bathams is a permanent feature. I am reminded that this weekend, in Bathams tied houses, there is a one-off 145 year old celebration beer this weekend. Probably for the best that I am not on 9% beer on a Sunday Lunch. I'd have failed to keep on top of the goal count in the Manchester Derby.
The beer was excellent, as was the Sunday lunch.
I recognised all the landlords in the Worcestershire CAMRA magazine. That's what happens when you have completed a county.
Now to think of a similar goal for 2023.
