A Proper Job
One of the great things about walking on (a working) holiday is planning where to park. Country Walking Magazine suggesting that we start at Upper Hope Car Park. A paltry 1.5 stars on Google, with claims about fines coming through even for people who have paid cash.
Time to spark up the National Trust website - and joy of joys, Bolberry Down is one of theirs. Another chance to scan my membership card before its two month expiry. And £3 to put into the booze kitty.
And what a place to start a walk. High on the SWCP, with dramatic views.
Coast left behind at Soar Mill Cove. Our charge, Ziggy, uninterested in the locals.
Devon has so many hollow green lanes that the inland walking is a joy too. Traffic free, through Bolberry and towards Hope Cove, where civilisation presents itself in the form of the 2018 Craft Beer Bar of the Year and the more traditional Hope and Anchor.
And it doesn't really matter what time you arrive. An 8am opener. A fine patio at the front to watch the comings and goings of village life, all with the pleasure of a damn fine Proper Job.
It would have been easy to stay all day, but afternoon naps aren't going to happen by themselves. Two miles back along the coast, with the finest views always behind.
