01/02/25 - Random Good Beer Guide Pubs in Plymouth

What to do in Plymouth when you've done the Classics

A football inspired trip to the Ocean City. I turned up, but the Albion didn't. Unsure if I have ever been as annoyed with a performance but if you're going to drown your sorrows, Plymouth is not a bad place to do it. Naval cities always are.

Of course, I have done the classics - so no Minerva or Dolphin today, but if you are looking for recommendations do not miss them.

So let's see what is new in Devon section of the bible.

A little bit of a suprise at the Duchy of Cornwall. I'm used to travelling distances for inconspicuous back street boozers. Even when they are in the sketchier parts of town. If you're not smoking jazz cigarettes, there looks like plenty of opportunity for purchase.

Corner Pub in a part of town where you need to keep moving

After the game, I'm out drinking with proper Plymouth pub men and not one of them has ever ventured in here. Some needed to look on Google Maps to find out exactly where it was and then I got a good two hours worth of stories from other hostelries in the area.

Through the door and one old boy, and a very inquisitive land-lady, keen to find out why I am in town and when she gets the answer, keen to discuss her many CAMRA awards. Last year's community POTY but the system is rigged this year.

The surprise - well some would say that one cask is plenty but it is a tad unusual for a Good Beer Guide Tick.

Mappiman - the Legend

A good hours worth of chat - mainly with the landlady. The old boy took to nodding in agreement. Maybe he had been a victim of a fine, when last opening his mouth.

A more expected experience at the Queens Arms down on the Barbican. A traditional single roomer, where you can choose between Timothy Taylor Landlord or Jail Ale.

Comfortable enough, but little to report on. A good striking point for both the Dolphin and Minerva, should you be new in town and want to see what the fuss is about.

Final new tick was a bit of a horror show, to be honest. A community pub for the arts scene, hosting frequent exhibitions and performances.

I'm afraid we have a different definition of Community Pubs. Mine does not include charging £8.20 for a craft beer and a packet of scampi fries.

Formerly, the Trafalgar. With more honest pricing scheme

The reason for my crafty Cornish Steam NEIPA? Only one cask on. In a rare show of confidence, I asked for a sample and turned it down. Whatever it was (and days have passed) it was flat and lifeless.

Still, it was quite pretty.  As long as you don't look at the ceiling in the back room. I'm now roofer, but I would say some slates are missing. Or something to do with flashing.
