09/04/17 - Geocaching in the Kenfig Dunes

Distance - 3 Miles
Walk Inspiration - Jarrold Cardiff, Swansea and the Gower - Walk 2
Geocaches - 8

In research for our Porthcawl mini break, this walk from the usually excellent Jarrold Pathfinder resource library was very nearly dismissed.

It just didn't look interesting enough.

Dull Looking?
OS Maps are usually superb at giving you an indication of what to expect on the ground.  But the light brown area of nothingness really doesn't do sand dunes justice.   The walk to the sea was interesting, varied and rather hard work in the sandiest areas.

Working our way to the Sea
The route is adapted to take in the geocaches on offer.  A surprisingly high content that had us doing all the good stuff that makes caching memorable.  This includes creeping out of the undergrowth when you think no-one is looking and dealing with ant infestations.

Ant Infestation
Photo doesn't do justice to how many ants lived there
The walk back inland is along the Welsh Coast Path and brings is to the highlight of the walk, Kenfig Pool.  The 2nd largest fresh water lake in South Wales - statfans.

All that was lacking was a place to get an Ice Cream.  Bizarrely, on the hottest day of the year, the Visitor Centre was firmly closed.
